The complete game between Helena and Menele — 3,200 years mapped as chess.

The complete game between Helena (White) and Menele (Black), mapped as chess. Every published move, every campaign event, every piece on the board. White moves first — Helena has been the aggressor for most of the game. Black plays the long defense and waits for the combination.


The Opening (1200 B.C. — 146 B.C.)

1. e4 — Helena is Embraced by Minos (1233 B.C.)

White’s first piece enters the game involuntarily. Minos creates a monster by forcing the Embrace through cruelty — chaining Helena to her father’s bed, prolonging the agony, locking her in a room with her aged father for her first Frenzy. The trauma creates a Plotter with Conscience 0.

1… c5 — Menele is Embraced by Troile (931 B.C.)

Black’s response is philosophical, not violent. Troile spends months in conversation before offering the Embrace. Menele enters the game as a Visionary with Humanity 10. The asymmetry is foundational: White plays from rage, Black from idealism.

2. Nf3 — Helena diablerizes Minos (1220 B.C.)

White eliminates her own creator. The Amaranth at Argos — Prias drives the stake, Helena drinks the blood. She ascends to 4th generation. The oracle at Delphi warned it would cost her soul. The Delphi Gambit: gaining material (generation) at the cost of position (Humanity). Conscience drops toward zero. Every future move is colored by this exchange.

2… d6 — Menele builds Carthage (~800 B.C.)

Black’s dream position. Menele draws Kindred and kine together in a city where vampires control the Beast, mortals share blood willingly, philosophers debate through the night. He serves as envoy, recruits Gangrel and Nosferatu support. He even draws Helena to Carthage — trusting in the dream’s power to convert enemies.

3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 — The Betrayal of Carthage (146 B.C.)

The Sicilian Defense, destroyed. Helena and Prias fight for Carthage until they see who will win. They defect to Rome, hand the Ventrue the intelligence needed to destroy the city. The legions salt the earth. Half a million volumes burned. Almost all Brujah destroyed.

White sacrifices her own position in Carthage to destroy Black’s entire development. Menele is away recruiting Gangrel in southern Africa. He returns to find ruins. This is the original sin of the game. Every move for the next three thousand years is a consequence of 3. d4.


The Italian Game (79 A.D. — 1415)

5. Bc4 — Helena rules Pompeii

White places her bishop on an aggressive diagonal. She rules a Roman city in luxury while Menele wanders the wilds of Western Europe, forswearing civilization.

5… Nf6 — Menele discovers Helena in Pompeii (79 A.D.)

A chance-met Gangrel reveals a beautiful Toreador ruling Pompeii. Menele visits in secret. The sight of her ruling over the city that replaced Carthage is like a stake in his heart.

6. Ng5!? — The Vesuvius Sacrifice (79 A.D.)

A speculative attack. Menele willingly enters his first Frenzy in a thousand years. Thaumaturgy + rage summons a spirit of fire. Pompeii is destroyed. But Menele loses control of the spirit and nearly dies himself. He believes he has destroyed Helena. He has not. The attack fails to win material and leaves Black overextended. Helena and Prias flee to Egypt.

7-20. Positional grinding (79 — 1415 A.D.)

Thirteen centuries of war across Eurasia. Neither side achieves a decisive advantage. Helena slowly gains the upper hand as Prias grows in power through millennia of feeding on 4th-generation blood. The game is closed, positional, attritional.

21. Qh5 — Helena strikes near Agincourt (1415)

White’s queen attacks directly. Helena and Prias deal Menele a near-fatal blow. This should be checkmate.

21… O-O-O — Menele castles queenside to the New World

The Agincourt Escape. Menele fakes his death. Trusted retainers carry his torpid body aboard a ship funded — unknowingly — by his own childe Critias. Phoenician legends of a western land provide the cover story. Helena believes she has won. She searches for 77 years before discovering the deception.

This is the pivotal move of the game. Black escapes a lost position by castling to a board Helena doesn’t know exists.


The New World Variation (1415 — 1832)

22. a4 — Helena sends Cortez (1519)

White follows across the Atlantic. She joins Cortez’s expedition with Prias and several female progeny. She finds Menele among the Inca — and destroys the civilization to flush him out. Then the Maya. Then she allies with Pizarro to destroy the Inca outright. Helena burns three human civilizations as positional moves in a chess game.

22… Kb8 — Menele flees north

Black retreats. Among the Pueblos. Then the Plains Indians. He abandons revenge and pursues Golconda. He builds a new civilization of depth. The Uktena Garou tolerate his presence — a rare alliance between vampire and werewolf. Humanity 10. Black’s king finds shelter in the corner while White sweeps the board.

23. Ra3 — Helena finds him among the Pueblos

White’s rook lifts to the third rank. Menele flees without fighting. She tracks him across the continent for decades.

24. Rh3 — Kansas, 1820

They meet on the plains. Menele is forced to flee again. He retreats to Chief Black Hawk.

25. Qxh7+ Kc8 — Fort Dearborn (1832)

The mutual destruction. Helena allies with the U.S. military. Menele with Black Hawk’s warriors. The air turns red with blood. A blood-red tornado covers the Indians’ retreat. Helena digs her claws into Menele’s ribs. Menele drives his skull into her forehead. Prias stakes Menele through the neck.

Both queens are taken. Both kings fall. Mutual torpor. Prias carries Helena to safety beneath the fort. Menele’s braves carry his body into the woods. The game enters a new phase — played by proxies while both players sleep.


The Correspondence Game (1832 — 1990)

Both Methuselahs play from torpor, communicating moves through psychic communion and Blood Bond compulsion. Every piece on the board is a proxy who does not know they serve a sleeping god.

26. b4 — Helena causes the Great Fire (1871)

From torpor, Helena discovers Menele already controls Prince Maxwell. She manipulates Chicago’s Malkavians into lighting the fire. Many of Menele’s pieces are destroyed. The Great Fire Gambit: sacrifice Chicago’s infrastructure to clear the board.

26… Nb6 — Menele regroups

Menele calls supporters from around the world. The Anarchs become his primary vehicle.

27. b5 — Lodin takes praxis

Helena’s new pawn defeats Maxwell and becomes Prince. White’s passed pawn reaches the fifth rank. Lodin controls Chicago without knowing he is controlled.

27… Nc4 — Critias arrives in Chicago

Menele’s childe — Blood-Bonded for two millennia but unaware his sire survived Carthage — settles in Chicago independently. The Blood Bond draws him like a compass needle. Critias becomes Brujah Primogen. The “Brujah School” and Path of Entelechy are Menele’s philosophy expressed through his childe’s mouth.

28. Bc3 — Helena secures the Primogen

Helena Dominates Nicolai (Tremere Regent). Blood-Bonds Tyler (Brujah assassin) through thirty years of manipulation. Controls Lodin, Nicolai, and Tyler. Three Primogen under White’s control.

28… Bd7 — Menele secures Inyanga

Inyanga falls under Menele’s extended Domination shortly after arriving in Chicago. Through her, Menele commands the entire Gangrel clan. The Laibon immigration pipeline through Lucian’s docks begins feeding Chicago with Menele’s people.

29. a5 — The Interdiction against Gary (1921-1960s)

Through Lodin, Helena sends Ballard and Capone to economically strangle Gary over four decades. Modius doesn’t understand he’s losing a siege, not a war. But Modius was sired by Annabelle, who will become Menele’s piece. The Interdiction that gutted Gary also created the conditions for Gary to become Menele’s staging ground. Helena’s aggression created her enemy’s reserve.

29… Na3 — Annabelle Triabell arrives in Chicago (1920s)

Annabelle, Toreador, sired by Maria (Helena’s childe). She settles in Chicago, builds a power base. Both Methuselahs begin fighting over her.

30. Qf3 — The Maldavis Exchange (Council Wars, 1983-1987)

White thinks she wins the exchange. Maldavis leads a Brujah uprising. Helena uses the crisis to Dominate Annabelle, believing she’s taking one of Menele’s strongest pieces.

30… Rxd1+! — Menele’s Exchange Sacrifice

The deepest move in the game. Menele deliberately sacrifices Maldavis — allows the uprising to fail — so that Helena will believe she captured Annabelle. But Annabelle is now Menele’s double agent inside Helena’s camp. Helena cannot believe Menele would sacrifice such a powerful tool. She is correct that it seems irrational. She is wrong about why.

Black gives up a rook to win the game.


The Quinn Combination (1968 — 1990)

A twenty-year forced sequence that operates beneath the main game.

Preparatory move: Heath Quinn tails Lodin’s motorcade on Lake Shore Drive. The defective bomb under the Learjet. Theater — establishing that someone is watching.

Intermediate move: The Piccadilly Auction (October 1969). Quinn bids triple on the Book of Nod journal. He doesn’t need it. He needs to be seen. He needs Lodin to send Roarke back alone.

The key move: Quinn shoots Roarke on the pavement. Suppressed rifle. Center mass. Then the vial of 4th-generation blood. Not enough to wake him. Enough to keep the candle lit. Menele converts an enemy pawn into a passed pawn on the opposite side of the board.

The promotion (New Year’s Eve, 1990): Twenty years later. Roarke — sustained by Menele’s blood, consumed with justified rage, believing his revenge is his own idea — kidnaps Prince Lodin. The pawn promotes. White’s queen is captured.


The Endgame (1990 — Present)

31. Kf1 — Helena awakens from torpor (~1990)

White’s king becomes active. Helena claws through the earth, kills Maria (her own 5th-generation childe) to feed, takes the Portia identity. She is weakened. She begins recovering at the Succubus Club.

31… f5! — Menele activates the Gary neonates

Sensing Helena’s awakening through Auspex 6, Menele manipulates events to send Gary’s neonates to Chicago to investigate Lodin’s disappearance. The coterie — Darius, Sable, and their allies — are drawn into the Jyhad as unwitting scouts.

32. Ke1 — Helena consolidates

She controls Nicolai. She watches from the Succubus Club as “Portia.” She is still the most dangerous thing in the city. Dominate 8 without eye contact. But she doesn’t know where Menele’s body is. She doesn’t know Annabelle has been turned. She doesn’t know Prias’s Bond has broken.

32… e5 — The Gary Staging Ground (Act I)

Everything the PCs built in Gary serves the endgame:

  • Darius builds the dock pipeline — adding capacity to the corridor Inyanga already controls through Lucian. Menele’s logistics expand.
  • Sable builds a west-side network — strengthening Modius’s court. Modius was sired by Annabelle. The court feeds Menele’s reserve.
  • Sullivan Dane pressures Gary — the hunter destabilizes Helena’s proxy camp.
  • Allicia’s blood bond — the coterie’s thread toward Carna in Milwaukee opens the Psychopomp corridor, leading deeper into Menele’s infrastructure.

The PCs think they are building their own power. They are developing Menele’s pieces.

33. Bd2 — Helena sends the coterie to Chicago

Annabelle arrives at Modius’s New Year’s Eve party with a letter from Lodin. Modius orders the PCs to deliver his reply to Chicago. Helena’s proxy sends Menele’s unwitting agents to investigate Menele’s own operation.

33… d5! — Act II: Ashes to Ashes begins

The coterie arrives in Chicago. They meet Ballard. They visit Lodin’s Haven at the Sears Tower with Belthazar and Critias. They find the vault torn open, the pendant, the body that is not Lodin.

The coterie is now touching both sides of the board simultaneously.

34. Bg5 — Critias observes from within

Critias — still Blood-Bonded to Menele — accompanies the coterie to the Sears Tower. He stands in the polished brass of the elevator with the patience of a man who has walked barefoot on roads that hadn’t been named yet.

35. Re1 — Lodin is rescued (D031)

The coterie pulls the stake. The Prince is returned to the board — but not the same prince. Roarke’s blood carries Menele’s vitae, and Lodin drinks it to wake. White’s queen is recovered, but she now carries traces of Black’s influence. The ghoul who stole her is dust on the amphitheater floor.

35… Bb5! — Menele’s triple combination (D031)

The deepest quiet move of the endgame. Three things happen in a single night, and none of them look connected:

  1. Darius drinks the vial — a hunger frenzy redirects Menele’s blood from the torpored body to the Ventrue emissary. Blood Bond Step 1. Black gains a new piece without moving. The frenzy was not accidental. Menele orchestrated it from torpor.

  2. Lodin is fed Roarke’s blood — which is Menele’s blood. The Prince of Chicago now carries the blood of the Methuselah who has been fighting him for three thousand years. Not a formal Bond. Something subtler. A frequency in the bloodstream.

  3. Menele’s body is delivered to Lodin — the coterie hands the torpored Methuselah directly to the Prince, who locks it in a cedar closet at the Drake Hotel. Black’s king is now inside White’s stronghold. Helena doesn’t know. Lodin doesn’t understand what he has. Menele is exactly where he wants to be.

The bishop slides to b5 and pins White’s rook to the king. Three separate threads converge on a single square. The coterie thinks they rescued the Prince. The Prince thinks he secured a valuable artifact. Menele knows he’s been carried home.


The Position After 35 Moves

White (Helena):

  • King active but weakened (Portia identity, recovering from torpor)
  • Lodin recovered but compromised (queen returned — carrying Black’s blood)
  • Nicolai controlled (bishop)
  • TylerJuggler chain (knight + pawn)
  • Brennon Thornhill (rook — Succubus Club defense)
  • Prias (rook — but secretly no longer bound; the rook may defect)
  • Annabelle (believed to be White’s bishop — actually Black’s)

Black (Menele):

  • King torpid but now inside White’s stronghold (Drake Hotel, Lodin’s custody)
  • Mind active (Auspex 6) — closer to awakening than at any point since 1832

  • Roarke’s cult dissolved, Roarke destroyed (passed pawn sacrificed after promotion)

Neutral / Contested:

  • Sable — not directly bonded but linked through Darius; investigation served Black’s interests
  • Tomas (Tremere) — recruited by Khalid as off-books intelligence asset. Holds Portia identification + bond discrepancy data. Running parallel to Pyramid and Methuselah networks. Unaware of the Methuselah war.
  • Khalid (Nosferatu Primogen) — hidden; each side assumes the other controls him. Now actively recruiting independent assets. Has verified Helena’s bond operation on the Sheriff.
  • Erichtho (Tremere) — suspicious of Portia; could blow Helena’s cover
  • The Sabbat — a third player not on this board

35. Rb1 — Helena bonds the staked Sheriff (Jan 10-17, 1991)

Helena (as Portia) has been visiting Balthazar’s staked body and feeding him her blood. The Sheriff’s Toreador bond advanced from Step 1 to Step 2 in seven days. One more drink and the new bond overtakes Lodin’s three-step hold. Helena is rebuilding enforcement capacity — when Balthazar is unstaked, he wakes loyal to her instead of the Prince. A Brujah Sheriff is a weapon. Helena is repointing it.

35… Na5 — Khalid recruits a Tremere counter-agent (T002)

Khalid al-Rashid makes his first active move. He approaches Tomas via Obfuscate persona and commissions an off-books Blood Walk to verify Helena’s bond operation. Khalid is building his own intelligence capability outside both Methuselahs’ awareness. The knight on the rim — low on material, high on information.

The Evaluation

Black is winning. White’s recovered queen carries Black’s blood. Black’s king has been delivered to the heart of White’s camp by White’s own pieces. Three of Black’s agents surround the Prince: Critias (Primogen), Darius (emissary, bonded), and Annabelle (double agent). Helena doesn’t know any of this.

Black’s remaining weakness: the king is still torpid. But he is no longer in the woods surrounded by rats. He is in a cedar closet in a luxury hotel, guarded by the Prince of Chicago, who is drinking his blood. The conditions for Menele’s awakening are assembling themselves.

The combination is nearly complete.
