Three-story brownstone on a tree-lined Gold Coast block between Astor Street and the lake. Limestone facade, black iron fence, a garden that stays green too late into November. The neighbors assume old money. They are half right.
Inside: hardwood floors, a library that smells of binding glue and something metallic, laboratories behind locked doors on the third floor. Every room temperature-controlled. Every threshold warded.
The basement is two levels deeper than the building permits show. The lower level has a stone floor older than the foundation above it.

Address: Astor Street between Schiller and Burton, Gold Coast. The brownstone sits among consulates and historic mansions. Nothing about the exterior announces what it is.
Neighborhood: Gold Coast / Near North. Old-money residential. Quiet streets, gas lamps, lakefront proximity. The wealth here is the kind that doesn’t need to advertise.
Proximity: Eight blocks north of the Succubus Club. Lake Shore Drive is two blocks east. Lincoln Park begins at North Avenue. The Magnificent Mile’s commercial corridor is four blocks south on Michigan Avenue.
Transit: CTA Red Line to Clark/Division, then walk north. Street parking. No cab traffic on the residential blocks after midnight.

Nicolai is regent. His authority within these walls is absolute, delegated from the Vienna council.
Abraham DuSable operates as Nicolai’s second and primary enforcer. He handles the chantry’s external business and the things Nicolai considers beneath direct attention.
