Elena grew up in El Paso with Tomás but took a different path. She married a mechanic named Carlos and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico. She has two children whom Tomás has never met.

Elena is more pragmatic than her brother. While Tomás was off in the Army and then the DIA, Elena stayed close to home, managing the family affairs and supporting her mother through the loss of their father.
