Ernesto was a quiet, hardworking man who crossed from Chihuahua in the 1950s. He worked construction at Fort Bliss, building the base’s foundations and fences. He was proud of his legal papers and the life he built for his family in El Paso.

He died of a heart attack in 1982 at fifty-three, in the parking lot of a Home Depot where he’d gone to buy lumber for a fence.
