Sofía is a second-generation Mexican-American living in El Paso, Texas. For thirty years, she cleaned houses in the Coronado Hills neighborhood, where the Army officers lived. She is a woman of quiet, steel-like dignity who has never let the hardships of the border break her.
Since the death of her husband Ernesto, she has lived alone in the house on Ochoa Street. She remains a devout Catholic, attending Mass at Sacred Heart every Sunday and lighting a candle for her son, whom the Army reported dead in a “classified training accident” in 1988. She doesn’t believe it.
