Humanity & Degeneration

Humanity track, degeneration checks, the dual axis of VtM play, and the Beast voice.

The Dual Axis

VtM play operates on two simultaneous tracks:

  • External: Power accumulation, domain, status, survival.
  • Internal: Humanity erosion, Beast encroachment, moral degeneration.

Both are always in play. Scenes that produce external gains often cost internal stability.

Humanity

Humanity measures how much of the mortal self remains intact. Range: 0–10.

HumanityDescription
10Saintly — near-impossible to maintain
8–9Humane — functional moral compass
6–7Average — some callousness
4–5Callous — difficulty relating to mortals
2–3Predatory — near-feral, dehumanizing
1Monstrous — barely coherent moral sense
0Wight — lost to the Beast, NPC

Degeneration Checks

When a vampire commits an act that violates their current Humanity level’s Hierarchy of Sins, they must roll:

Pool: Conscience rating, difficulty 8. Failure = lose 1 Humanity permanently.

The Hierarchy of Sins is tiered — acts at or below the current Humanity level require checks. Acts above the current level do not (already too far gone to feel them). See Paths of Enlightenment for the full Hierarchy table and Path variants.

Frenzy

The Beast emerges when stress exceeds Self-Control. Frenzy = temporary loss of rational control — the vampire acts on pure predatory instinct. See Frenzy & Rotschreck for the full trigger table and resistance rules.

Beast Voice

When BP falls to half or below the pool maximum: consider writing one italicized sentence per scene voicing the Beast’s commentary — hunger, rage, predatory assessment. The Beast never offers solutions; it narrows options.

The man smelled of blood and fear. The Beast noted: he would be easy.

Rotschreck

The Frenzy of fear — triggered by fire, sunlight, True Faith. The vampire flees, cannot act rationally until the source is removed.

Pool: Courage, difficulty varies. Fire: diff 3–8 (intensity-dependent). Sunlight: diff 7–10. True Faith: diff equals Faith rating.

The Beast Pool (Narrative Tool)

Beast pressure = 10 − Humanity. Not a mechanical pool — a narrative measure of how easily the Beast finds purchase. A vampire at Humanity 4 has a Beast pool of 6; the Beast is closer to the surface, sharper, harder to deny.
