Sable called first.

A Tuesday in February, ten days after the Elysium. She used the studio phone, the line Modius knew about, which meant the call was insurance before it was anything else. Darius picked up on the third ring. They talked for forty minutes about nothing — court, The Torch, the weather in Gary as if either of them felt it. When she hung up she sat on the floor of Allicia’s old studio and looked at the pointe shoes turning on their ribbons and thought about the man on the other end of the line and what she was doing and whether she was doing it for Modius or for herself and whether the distinction mattered.
